WHAT IS A MALA?

If you have ever dived more into spirituality, yoga philosophy, meditation, and the history of yoga in general then you have probably heard of a Mala. While Mala’s are worn around the neck like a neckless, they actually serve a much bigger purpose. If you don’t know, a Mala is a powerful and culturally rich tool used for meditation. It’s a string of 108 prayer beads. At the end of the Mala is a tassel. The tassel represents the connection to your spirit and your highest truth. In tradition, these malas are used to recite mantras. A full cycle of the mantra is 108 times (each bead). By the time you finish, you feel much more at peace than before. These Mala’s can be simply worn as a reminder of an intention you've set for yourself, or when you are hoping to find a deeper connection to your body, mind, and spirit.

Now that you know what a Mala is, which one should you get?

If you've done your research you would know that are many different malas out there to choose from. Mala’s can be on the expensive side, but it truly can bring a change in your spiritual practice. The beads on the mala are made of different stones. For example, my mala consists of Howlite, Labradorite, and Snowflake Obsidian. These stones are all unique In helping you make a deeper connection with yourself.

When looking for a Mala I always recommend getting what you feel called to. The same technique I use for picking crystals. If there is a Mala that catches your eye, maybe there is a deeper reason for it. Maybe the stones in that mala are something that you need to work on within yourself.

If you are lucky, there are people who will custom make Mala’s, and other types of spiritual stones and jewelry. You can have a Mala focused on what you exactly need. Maybe that is a full rose quartz mala meaning you want to focus more on your heart chakra, opening up, and letting love in.

You can have multiple Mala’s, that can be used for different times throughout your life.

I encourage doing research on Mala’s and knowing about what a helpful spiritual tool it can be.

I love my mala and not only do I meditate it, and recite mantras, but I also just wear it around my neck in my everyday life to feel more in touch with spirituality.
